The photography and conservation communities are mourning the loss of Charles Glatzer, a revered figure among the old guard of wildlife and nature photographers, who passed away on Sunday, June 28, from injuries sustained in a tragic three-car accident.

The crash occurred on Friday in Cherokee County, South Carolina. According to the Coroner’s Office, Glatzer, of Hendersonville, was driving south on Interstate 85 when his Porsche was side-swiped by a tractor-trailer and then T-boned by another vehicle. Rescued from the wreckage, he was airlifted to Spartanburg Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries early Sunday morning.

Beyond the stark facts of the accident lies a profound legacy. For over 15 years, Glatzer was a cherished fixture at the Churchill Wild ecolodges, more than a guest—he was family. His passion for capturing the raw beauty of the natural world earned him deep respect and affection from all who knew him.

Charles Glatzer’s passing leaves a void not only in the hearts of his friends and the lodge family who adored him but also in the photographic world he helped shape. His eye for the extraordinary in the wild will be dearly missed. A fuller tribute to his life and work will be shared in the coming weeks, honoring the man behind the lens whose vision touched so many.
